Volunteering

Thousands of volunteers get their hands dirty every day to care for and repair the natural environment. The Wimmera has experienced great success in the delivery of ‘on ground works’ and Landcare projects, largely thanks to the efforts and hard work of volunteers.

VolunteersThe continual involvement of community volunteers in natural resource management is a healthy and sustainable activity of real importance to Wimmera CMA and the region.

Wimmera CMA is always looking at innovative ways to engage and motivate volunteers in its on-ground activities. It is an ongoing challenge due to a steady decrease in rural populations.

Wimmera Landcare invites individuals and groups from urban areas to undertake Landcare activities such as tree planting during three key community weekends across the catchment. The first community event, Project Hindmarsh, celebrated its 10th anniversary in August 2007.

These major community tree planting weekends usually occur in late July or August:
* Project Hindmarsh Community Landcare Weekend (Hindmarsh Shire)
* Yarrilinks (Yarriambiack)
* Project Platypus Plantout (Northern Grampians/Ararat Rural City)

Wimmera CMA is also exploring options such as the use of paid contractors to achieve on-ground improvements.

If you wish to get involved and become a Wimmera CMA volunteer, please contact the volunteer coordinator at Wimmera CMA. Alternatively, may wish to contact your local Landcare group to discuss local projects and how to get involved. Find your local Landcare area here:  icon Landcare Boundary Areas (373.02 kB)
